Phlebotomy Practice Test & Certification Guide

Practice test content is for exam preparation only and does not constitute medical advice. Always follow your employer's or facility's policies, your state regulations, and the instructions of licensed health care professionals. Information on this page is current as of November 2026; exam details change, so verify with the official source before you register.

Which Phlebotomy Certification Should You Choose?

There is no single national phlebotomy exam. Six organizations certify phlebotomy technicians, and state requirements differ. We cover the three most common systems in depth: NHA, ASCP, and NCCT. California, Louisiana, Nevada, and Washington require state licensure in addition to certification, so always check your own state's requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the NHA phlebotomy exam hard?

The NHA CPT exam covers five sections with 100 scored questions in 2 hours. Most candidates find Safety and Compliance and Routine Blood Collections the largest sections (26 and 28 scored questions), so those deserve the most study time.

2. What is the passing score for the NHA phlebotomy exam?

NHA uses a scale score from 200 to 500. The commonly reported passing score is 390, but this is a community-reported figure; confirm the current requirement in the official NHA Candidate Handbook.

3. What is the passing score for ASCP and NCCT?

ASCP requires a scale score of at least 400 (range 100-999). NCCT requires a scale score of at least 575. Both figures are published by the respective organizations.

4. How many questions do I need to draw before the exam?

NHA eligibility includes documented proof of 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary (skin) punctures completed within five years, along with a high school diploma or GED and completion of a training program or qualifying work experience.

5. Do I need state licensure to work as a phlebotomist?

It depends on your state. California, Louisiana, Nevada, and Washington require state licensure. Other states may have their own requirements, so check your state's health department or licensing board.

6. Can I retake the exam if I fail?

Yes. NHA requires a 30-day wait after a first failure and a 1-year wait after a third failure. Policies for ASCP and NCCT differ, so review the official handbook for your chosen exam.
